St. Pölten is a compact city, and most places are easy to reach by bike or bus. Whether you want to explore the city or travel to Vienna (which is only 25 minutes away by train!), here is everything you need to know.

Nextbike (Bike Sharing)

The most convenient way to get around the city. St. Pölten has a special deal where the first 15 minutes of every ride are free. Since the city is small, this usually covers your entire trip!

  • How it works: Download the app, register (free), and scan the QR code on the bike to unlock it.
  • Cost: The first 15 minutes are free. After that, it costs a small fee (usually €1 per 15 mins).
  • Tip: You can return the bike at any official station. Make sure to push the lock down to end your rental.

LUP Bus (City Bus)

You can’t miss them, they are blue buses driving around town. The “LUP” network connects the train station, the USTP/university campus, and the city centre.

St. Pölten Hauptbahnhof is a major hub. For travel outside the city, you have two main options, depending on how often you travel.

1. ÖBB Vorteilscard Jugend (Best for occasional travellers)

If you plan to travel by train only on weekends or for holidays, this is your best choice.

  • Cost: €21 for one year (for everyone under 26).
  • Benefit: You get 50% off all standard ÖBB train tickets.

If you plan to commute to Vienna often or travel all over Austria, a KlimaTicket is a flat-rate annual pass.

  • VOR KlimaTicket MetropolRegion: Valid for all public transport in Vienna, Lower Austria, and Burgenland (including the subway in Vienna!).

    • Cost for Youth (<27): Approx. €700/year (price subject to change, check current rates).

  • KlimaTicket Österreich: Valid for all public transport in the entire country of Austria.
